PACE

Sean Bailey

"PACE," for Clarinet in A and Electronics, materialized while composer Sean Bailey was trail running through the Wissahickon Park in Philadelphia. The work reflects the relentlessness of maintaining forward mechanical effort through musical "perpetual motion", maintaining a steady surface rhythm and relying on register and harmonic context to capture the waves of energy that come and go during endurance efforts: the rush of feeling a "second wind" late into a tiring run. Sonically and compositionally, the work functions as a postlude to "GENERIC," picking up where the previous work left off and ending with a wash of "note clouds," generated by training a computer system on the human-composed elements of the piece.
