Gambler's Fallacy

Lyrics about addiction are nothing new, however, Philadelphia’s Beatrix Thorn, the alter ego of Natalie Gebhardt, tackles a form of addiction that we rarely hear in song form, gambling. On the first single from her new project for Spring Garden Records, Gambler’s Fallacy, Gebhardt tells the story of an ex-coworker at a cafe in suburban Massachusetts in 2018.

This co-worker’s life was extremely dramatic: legal battles over his driver’s license and DUIs, moving above the restaurant so he wouldn’t have to drive to work, physical fights and altercations with on-and-off again boyfriend, and as you can guess from the song’s title, a gambling addiction. On paydays, he would often ask Gebhardt to “go in on a roll of scratchies”, often spending $200 at one go. She always said no, but this individual’s behavior left a lasting impression on her. Gambler’s Fallacy is Beatrix Thorn’s re-telling of a story of a person whose addiction stemmed from a desire to fill a void of loneliness and unhappiness in their life.

Written by Gebhardt, with piano and vocals recorded at the Spring Garden Records studio, Gambler’s Fallacy is the first collaborative production with Philadelphia’s Starkey (Deadbeats, Ninja Tune, Decca, Seclusiasis). The somber track harkens back to the sound of 90s trip-hop with lofi beats and swirling cut-and-paste synth pulses and orchestral swells supporting Gebhardt’s vocal and piano performance.
